Does Anyone have an Experience with RSV?

My 6 month old niece is in the hospital. She went in for problems with her intestines, which was corrected with surgery. However, there were some complications and she had to be intubated. When she stabilized, they tried removing the tube but her throat swelled up and they had to put it back in. They tried again a couple days later and her lung collapsed. Now they say she has RSV and is at risk for developing pneumonia. I know that for most children RSV is no more harmful than a cold, but for others it leads to death. Who are the "others" likely to be? She was not premature nor does she have asthma. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
