Do I need to check in extra early for international flights?

I'm flying out of Detroit on thursday evening and staying overnight in the minneapolis airport (a layover) and then flying to jamaica the next morning. Do I need to check in extra early in Detroit with my pport and everything? If so, how much earlier? This is being compared to an average in country flight.
