Want feminist answers?
I would say that a big reason why feminism has met such resistance over the years is that, knowingly or otherwise, it seeks to make men irrelevant. When women were mothers and homemakers, and men were fathers and providers, everyone had a guaranteed place in society. But since women can now provide for themselves and their families, men have been feeling more and more obsolete. Women have a place in society by simple virtue of their biology. Only women can make babies. But men have always had to earn their keep in other ways, ways that are no longer our exclusive domain. How do you think men are supposed to feel, knowing that we can't muscle in on your turf, but you have been muscling in on ours for decades? What "indispensable" role are we supposed to fill now?
