What are the steps in the patent process, i want to own all rights to my electronic idea/enhancement?

i have an upadate or addition for an idea or concept which already exists, I have a few companies in mind i would like to pitch this idea to. But first I would like to ensure my rights and credits for this particual upgrade/idea. What are the proper steps to take?
