Can a group of people such as a church ......?

sponsor someone to come to live in the US and how do we go about this. This is someone very close to me and someone whom I will be marrying also. Because of a new law in his country his field of employment will be pretty much obsolete and he is now considering coming here when up til now I was the one going there. I would really appreciate some helpful advice .
